UPDATE! “Celebrating a Culture of Peace” was a success! Read the front page article from the October 7, 2020 edition of the Americus Times-Recorder for reflections on the day from Mama Peace, Dr. Jeni Stepanek!
The Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation holds an annual summertime Peace Day event in Rockville, Maryland to celebrate Mattie’s birthday of July 17. This year, we are thrilled to be adding an annual fall event in Americus/Sumter County, to celebrate the October 1 birthday of Mattie’s friend, mentor, and fellow peacemaker President Jimmy Carter. We hope you will join us on Saturday, October 3 from 1-3 pm for a fun-filled afternoon at Lenny’s Market, located at 110 N. Hampton Street, Americus, Georgia.
Free special event facemasks will be provided to all attendees by T-31, and social distancing will be enforced to help keep everyone safe. There will also be a drive-through option for those not comfortable being out in public. T&J’s CoolTreats will be providing both hot and cold food and drink items, with attendees receiving their choice of 1 free treat. To help you work off the goodies, we’re excited to have DJ Maurice Bell on hand to help set the peace party mood and get folks dancing!
Each of the 4 corners of Lenny’s Market will house a unique Peace Station. At the Peace Garden, guides will share information about Mattie Stepanek and the work the Foundation is doing to spread his messages of hope and peace in Sumter County. Event t-shirts, bandanas, books, peace bracelets, and other items will be available for donations to help fund the work of the Foundation. At Community Cake & Conversations, sponsored by Americus Rotary, attendees can chat with area leaders about working together to make our community a more peaceful one. Mayor Barry Blount, Police Chief Mark Scott, Chief Deputy Col. Eric Bryant, and County Commissioner Chairman Clay Jones are scheduled to be on hand to share pieces of peace (cupcakes) with those who stop by. At Seek, Make & Bring Peace, there will be 3 separate areas of hands-on activities for people of all ages and abilities to help foster awareness of how #PeaceIsPossible by learning ways to #ChoosePeace for yourself, your family, your community, and the world. You can get creative through fingerpainting and chalk art at Celebrate Peace/Mosaic Station. Area artists will share about our Community Mosaic Project, and if you’d like to have your own peace expression added to it, you will receive a mosaic kit to take home and return in the coming weeks. The completed mosaic will be unveiled sometime in early 2021.
As Mattie said in his poem For Our World, “In so many ways, we are the same. Our differences are unique treasures. We have, we are, a mosaic of gifts.” Come out, share your Heartsongs, and let’s celebrate how we can work together to help make our community a more peaceful, inclusive, and compassionate one.
